Diabetes is a medical condition where the pancreas either loses its ability to create insulin, or the body fails to use the insulin that it has produced. Ok so you are looking to make money on the Internet. Well first let me tell you about E-currency and why not to use e-currency. Colorado Fly Fishing - Bait Huckin’ vs. Fly Fishin’

It was one of those fishing trips. You know, everyone catches fish but you, you loose six or eight of your most expensive streamers, it rains buckets, and you sink the boat. That’s right; I got skunked at Steamboat Lake over Memorial weekend.

I was determined to show those meat huckers (worms and power bait) that a well chosen and strategically placed fly was as effective as anything a conventional fisherman could load on a hook and hang under a bobber. Well, no such luck, I got stomped.

The fish were rising like mad on a midge hatch, and I threw everything in the box at them. I could swear I saw a hefty rainbow nudge my fly to the side to eat the natural laying only centimeters from my damn near perfect replica. As we watched the group of 12 year olds add another 18″ fish to their stringer (full loaded, I might add) I decided it must be a lake thing. I don’t fish lakes often.

I usually have good luck with a streamer in faster moving water, so I head for one on the several tributaries hoping to get the boat up far enough to make a make a few good casts. No such luck, here comes the wind. Determined and frustrated, I proceed to lose several of my best streamers in the dense shrubbery surrounding the mouth of the creek (can’t retrieve them since the current is too strong to get the boat any further up the creek).

On the way back to camp we are passed by a couple of boats with stringers of fish crashing off the bows of their boats (hmmm, are they just rubbing it my face, or are they tenderizing the meat?)Questioning my decision to become a fly fisherman, I head over to the dock to pick up my 5 year-old son and a fresh styro of night crawlers. I’ll let my son fish the meat before I crumble and load one up on the spinner myself. Surprising, no luck with the meat either, and hear comes the rain. I throw my arms up and ponder my karma activity of the past year.

We charge for shore as the lake turns to white caps. The rain and lightning moves in fast. Did I mention that we got the boat for free and have no clue what to do in the rain? We pull the boat up close to shore near our camp, outside of the no-wake zone. We leave all of our gear and head for the soggy camp.

Well, apparently it’s best to leave your boat in protected cove in the no wake zone. From what we could tell, our boat was hammered with 300 to 400 gallons of water from the waves and boat wakes from boaters rushing back to the dock. Yes, it sank in 18 inches of water. I didn’t realize a boat could sink in 18″ of water! All of our gear is floating around the shore. The gas tank and gear which included an Orvis waste pack with hmmmm, some 500 plus flies. Every box any fly had to be opened and dried on the dashboards of our trucks.

We bail the boat, load the truck and haul our soggy gear and crippled egos back home.

Next memorial day, it’s back to the river!!!

Weathervanes- Monitor your wind direction with beauty!

A weather vane, also called a wind vane, is a movable device attached to an elevated object such as a roof for showing the direction of the wind.

The weather vane must be balanced so that half its weight is on either side of its axis, but also designed so that the areas exposed to the wind are unequal. This unequal area causes the vane to rotate and minimize the force of the wind on its surface. The design of the vane causes the end with the smallest area to turn into the wind, pointing to the source of the wind. Because winds are named from their source direction, the pointer enables the viewer to name the wind easily. Most simple weather vanes have directional markers beneath the pointer, aligned with the geographic directions. The pointer must be able to move freely on its axis.

Weathervanes, especially those with fanciful shapes, do not always show the real direction of a very gentle wind. This is because the figures do not achieve the design balance required in a weather vane. Early weather vanes had very ornamental pointers, but modern wind vanes are usually simple arrows that dispense with the directionals because the instrument is connected to a remote reading station. Also modern wind vanes were mounted with an anemometer, a device that measures wind speed.

To obtain an accurate reading, the weather vane must be located well above the ground and away from buildings, trees, and other objects which interfere with the true wind direction. Changing wind direction can be meaningful when coordinated with other apparent sky conditions, enabling the user to make simple short range forecasts.

Another wind direction device is the windsock. These are used at airports to show wind direction and strength. The wind fills the sock and makes it blow away from the prevailing wind. Strong winds make the sock point almost horizontally, while light airs allow the sock to hang limply. Because of its size, the wind sock can often be seen from the air as well as the ground. Even the most technologically-advanced airports still use windsocks today. Weathervanes are not only a signal of ancient history, but also a knowledgeable weather-reading instrument.

Silvia Johnson and the Cool Parenting Movement in America

Being a parent is the hardest job you’ll never get a paycheck for. In fact, I think before you can become a parent you should take a Parenting Equivalency Test (P.E.T.). After all, parenting is the most important job on the planet, ironically anyone can be a parent, but everyone isn’t qualified to parent. Many parents can’t put together a cohesive thought let alone teach their kids how to succeed. I think its high-time the United States Government starts issuing parental licenses. If you can’t find your state on a map you shouldn’t be allowed to pro-create.

We should round up terrible parents and sterilize them immediately. The offspring of terrible parents should each be given a free college education, a get out of jail free card, voodoo dolls in the likeness of their parents and a bag of needles. It’s not these children’s fault they were born before the P.E.T. program was introduced. It’s our fault. We allowed dumb parents to bear children.

No savings account? No kids.
No diploma? No boom-boom.
Didn’t finish your GED? Don’t finish.

I think you get my point.

I’m only half-joking. I don’t want the government regulating parenting, but you must admit there are a lot of idiots raising kids. Take the parents of some of my daughters friends for instance:


“I wish you were like my friends parents….:”

“What do you mean?”

“They let her smoke and drink as long as she doesn’t do it in front of them”

“I guess I’ll never be cool because if I catch you using drugs or alcohol I’m grounding you for 3 months”

What is cool parent exactly? The words cool and parent should never appear in the same sentence. This brings me to Silvia Johnson. If you haven’t heard of Silvia Johnson let me bring you up to speed. Silvia Johnson is the so-called “cool mom” who held parties for teenage boys almost weekly between October 2003 and October 2004. This horrible mom and danger to society, provided drugs and alcohol to eight boys and had sex with five of them. On November 15th, according to CNN, this “cool mom” was sentenced to 30 years, to which she probably replied, “not cool dude”.

Let’s see how cool Ms. Johnson is when she steps out of prison in 2035 in an orange jumpsuit and flip-flops.

Good ole Silvia Johnson is a prime example of parenting gone wrong. Way wrong.

I’m a good dad. I provide food, shelter and structure for my children. My daughter is only 15; who cares if she thinks I’m cool? My daughter wants what all teenagers want: freedom. It’s my job not to give it to her. These are the rules of parenting.

I cannot allow my daughter to screw up her life on my watch. When she becomes 21 or I’m dead she can be free, until then I’m the sheriff and her freedom must be earned. If you ask me, my daughter’s friends could use some good parenting instead of this so called new age “cool parenting”. Cool parenting is just another word for child-neglect and child -endangerment.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still believe underage drinking and drug experimentation have no place in the home, it should be done where its always been done, at college.

Cross Training

One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise is that there
is “one” program that works for someone all the time. People
think that they need to get on a particular workout program and
just keeping doing that program over and over again. Although
getting on a good program IS a necessary first step, ensuring
that your body doesn’t adapt to that program is critical to
ensuring that your results don’t slow down or stop!

In order to maintain the effectiveness of your workouts over the
long term, you have to employ a concept known as cross training.
Although there is no hard and fast definition of cross training,
the basic idea is that you continually change your exercise
program to work both your muscular and your cardiovascular
systems in a variety of ways, forcing your body to adapt to a
new stimulus. Remember that the whole idea behind exercise is to
make your body do things that it is not used to doing. In
response to that effort, your body naturally adapts in order to
meet the changing energy demands of the activities that you
engage in. This process happens with your muscles, as well as
with your heart, lungs, and circulatory system - collectively
known as the cardiovascular system. To ensure you get the most
out of your cross training efforts, you should make changes to
the activities that challenge your muscles as well as your
cardiovascular system.

Challenging Your Muscles

When you are putting together the muscular training part of your
exercise program, remember that the primary mission of the
activities is to challenge your muscles and connective tissues -
tendons and ligaments - beyond their normal boundaries. For
example, if you were to pick up a suitcase that only weighed 5
pounds, it would probably not be very difficult for you.
However, if that same suitcase had 50 pounds worth of items
inside, it would be significantly more difficult to pick up and
carry. In response to that increased demand, your body would
recruit additional muscle fibers to assist with the work, and in
some cases would even recruit a different type of muscle fiber.
Although we won’t get into the details about the different types
of muscle fibers in the human body, you do want to take away the
fact that the number and type of muscle fibers recruited for any
given task is proportionate directly to the difficulty of the
task.

Let’s apply this concept to weight training - or resistance
training, as it is often called. If you were going to do a basic
bicep curl with 5 pounds, your body would engage a certain
number and type of muscle fibers. Doing exactly the same
exercise with a more challenging weight would cause your body to
need additional resources in order to handle the increased
demand. However, is that only true of picking up a heavier
weight? What would happen if you used the same weight, but did a
higher number of repetitions? The same basic concept applies -
your body will recruit additional resources in order to
accomplish the task. What can be determined from that fact is
that in order to change the stimulus on your body, two easy ways
to do so are are to increase the weight and/or increase the
number of repetitions.

However, there are other ways to challenge a particular muscle
group in addition to simply adding weight or repetitions. What
about changing the position of your body when you do the
exercise? Using the same example as above - the bicep curl -
most people do the basic version of that exercise standing up,
with their arms extended, elbows at the side, and palms facing
forward. What if you were to do the same exact movement, only
this time, you turn your palms to face the center of your body
throughout the entire exercise? Do you see how that would change
the stimulus? You would still be engaging the biceps of your
upper arm, but you would also engage the muscles of your
forearms in a different way, just because of the position of
your palms.

Further, what if you were to change the speed at which you did
the exercise? Most resistance exercises should be done as a
basic count of 2 seconds during the initial phase (also known as
the concentric phase), and then a count of 3 to 4 seconds during
the second phase of the movement (known as the eccentric phase).
What if you were to reverse that process? Count to 4 during
phase one, and only count to 2 during phase two. Do you think
your body would need to react differently to handle the
different stress? Of course!

There are many, many different kinds of exercises for the
biceps. If you normally do bicep curls, hammer curls, and cable
curls, what would happen if you started using 2 or 3 of the
bicep curl machines instead? Your body would have to adapt to
the new stimulus! By sitting down in a bicep curl machine, you
are no longer using your leg, back, and abdominal muscles to
stabilize yourself like you were when you were standing up doing
a bicep curl. However, by locking your body into a certain
position on the machine, you are isolating the biceps, allowing
you to focus more on the contraction of the bicep muscles during
the movement. Does that mean that the machines are better than
the dumbbells? No. It also does not mean that the dumbbells are
better than the machines - it just depends on what your goal is.
What you need to take away from this section is not that one
exercise is better than another - just that they are different,
and that is cross training.

To summarize, here are but a few of the ways that you can cross
train your muscles:

* Heavier Weights * Higher Number of Repetitions * Change the
Position of Your Body * Modify the Speed of the Exercise * Use
Machines as well as Free Weights

Challenging Your Cardiovascular System

Just like the muscular system, your body will find ways to adapt
to the cardiovascular training that you do, and before long you
will stop seeing a high degree of results. Let’s try to use some
of the same concepts that we applied to resistance training, and
see if they also apply to cardiovascular training!

Heavier Weights

How can you make yourself heavier? Most people are trying to
make themselves LIGHTER when they exercise! However, if you are
able to find a safe way to increase the total amount of weight
that your body is moving during cardiovascular training, don’t
you think that the activity would be more difficult, and force
your body to adapt? Sure it would!

A common method that people use to do this is one that you
should NOT do, and that is strap on wrist weights or ankle
weights, or to carry dumbbells while you are doing cardio.
Although this does increase the total amount of weight being
moved by your body, it also puts a stress on your joints that is
not natural, and therefore, not a good idea. However,
alternatives that DO work include putting on an adjustable
weighted vest, or even just strapping on a backpack with some
weights or books in it! The idea is to keep the additional
weight as close to your body as possible, away from easily
damaged joints.

Higher Number of Repetitions

Although you don’t normally count repetitions when you are doing
cardio, you DO take a certain number of steps, have a certain
number of revolutions per minute on the elliptical or the bike,
or you take a certain number of steps on the stair master. Do
you think that increasing those numbers would help? You bet!
Whether it be by staying on the equipment for longer, or just
working out harder to get a higher number of steps or
revolutions in the same amount of time, either way you have
changed the stimulus on your cardiovascular system (not to
mention your legs!), and by reacting to that new stress, your
cardiovascular system will burn more calories while adapting to
the new program.

Change the Position of Your Body

You may be asking yourself at this point just how many positions
can the body be in when you are walking on the treadmill? The
answer is PLENTY! Changing the incline of the equipment is an
obvious way to change the position of your body, provided you
continue to STAND UP STRAIGHT. If you hunch over, or grab the
machine for support, you are defeating the purpose. What about
leaning backwards or forwards when riding a bike, or peddling an
elliptical? By changing the angle at which your legs are pushing
on the machine, you are most certainly changing the stimulus,
forcing your body to adapt!

Modify the Speed of the Exercise

This one pretty much goes without saying! Go faster, and you’ll
burn more calories, and elicit a new adaptive response from your
body. However, what about going slower? What if you are used to
the Cycling class where your instructor seems to be made of
steel, and can spin his/her legs around 80,000 times a minute
for 30 minutes straight? Can slowing down be as effective as
that? Sure it can! Trying reaching down to tighten up the
resistance knob on that bike past your normal comfort level, and
it’s guaranteed that your body and your legs will have to find a
new way to provide energy, even though you are actually going
slower than you were a few minutes ago.

Use Machines as well as Free Weights

Other than what we discussed above with weight vests/backpacks
vs. ankle/wrist weights, you really don’t use free weights
during cardio. However, you DO ride a treadmill or an exercise
bike or a stair master on a regular basis, right? Trade those
machines in for the real thing! Go outside and go for a brisk
walk or a jog. Use a REAL bike and get out for some fresh air
and an invigorating ride around your area. Find a tall building
in your area and walk up and down the stairs. It’s a safe bet
that after a few flights you’ll be wishing you were back on the
stair master with it’s motorized movement assistance!

The examples above have been just a few ways that you can cross
train your body. There are many different training protocols,
and literally thousands of different exercises that the human
body is capable of. You should research as many different
training protocols as possible, and even enlist the aid of a
personal trainer if you need help setting up a program for
yourself, or to change the program that you are already on.
Remember, the key is to make your body ADAPT to new stimulus as
often as possible!

Now get out there and get some exercise!

Flea Control for Dogs

There are many different methods of flea control.

If you have a dog, flea control is an important part of being a responsible owner. After all, no dog likes to have fleas, but often it happens anyway. For most dogs, an occasional flea dip, or a bath with flea-killing shampoo is enough to keep the problem under control. However, if that doesn’t work for flea control, it might be necessary to try other things.

Usually, the flea dip will be enough, however, if it isn’t, you should try giving your dog regular baths with flea shampoo. You can find high quality flea shampoo at any of your local pet stores, and it’s generally not too expensive. This is a great option for flea control if you have a dog who doesn’t mind baths, or who isn’t afraid of the water.

If this doesn’t work, you can also try getting a flea repellent collar. While it’s always possible just to put the flea collar on, most people choose to put both the flea collar and the dog’s normal collar on - that way you get flea control and the dog is identifiable if it gets lost.

There are other types of flea control that have also proven to be very effective. For example, there is a sort of spot-on type of flea control that is easily applied to the dog’s skin. Usually these types of flea control are effective for a month or more, however, they usually only affect adult fleas. It might be a good idea to get an egg stopper collar, which works to kill flea eggs. That way, you’ll kill both the adult fleas and the flea eggs, eliminating your dog’s flea problem.

If none of these treatments work for effective flea control, however, you should definitely talk to you vet. Your veterinarian may be able to recommend some even more effective treatments that aren’t sold over the counter. Hopefully, however, one of the many products that are on the market will help you to keep your dog flea free.
