Logo Design and Branding - Points to Remember

A good logo design is highly instrumental in establishing a business brand and creating a long lasting impression among its customers. It should be able to create a powerful impact on the viewers and successfully exude the nature and attitude of a business. Ideally, a company logo design should be able to communicate your company ethos, principles, mission and the nature of product/service offered, to the viewers.

A professional logo design would establish a professional image of your company and strengthen your brand. Actually, in most cases the consumer gets the first impression about the company through your logo. Your business logo should build a brand that is strong enough to give your consumer a visual imagery of your company. People should be able to identify your company on sight of your logo.

Trend shows, most of the good logos are simple and often text based. Think of the IBM, SONY or Microsoft logo, even if you view a part of it you will be able to recognize the company. It is extremely essential for a logo to be easy for people to remember.

This principle of simplicity applies n most cases, however, we often see exceptions in Government Organizations, Hotels and Luxury resorts etc because they want to put up a classical exclusive image. This again brings us to a very important point that should be considered for a good logo design — the nature of business.

While simplicity can be the basic principle for any logo design, the designs might vary widely depending on the nature of business. For example, a financial institution might like to use a bold face font to express solidarity and stableness where as a courier service or transport company might prefer italicized fonts to express the speed and movement involved in their business.

In addition, while specifying the design requirements for your logo you should consider the fact that you will probably have to use your logo on your fax cover and other places where it will be in black and white. You should ensure that your logo looks equally good and attractive in black and white.

I would also suggest avoiding a very trendy look for your logo if you are planning for a long-term business because what we concern “modern” today might be backdated tomorrow. It is very important that your logo designer knows how to maintain this balance.

While any professional logo designer should be able to create a Custom Logo Design once you have provided them with your specifications, you should be careful to select an experienced designing company and not land up with some single designer start up venture.

Last but not the least important factor is price. You are paying for your logo - something that is going to be used to establish your brand and represent your business for years, so you should be ready to pay a decent amount while it is also not necessary to pay some big amount like $350 for a logo. With the online logo design firms coming into business, now you have a wide choice of price for your logos and it should not be difficult to find a logo designer that fits your budget. Some logo design sites would even allow you to quote your own price for your logo.

Knolls totaled those scores and gave the employees additional points based on their years of service. It has the burden to prove that its decision was based on a reasonable factor other than age. In Meacham Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory was planning to lay off a number of employees. For example it would not be illegal to consider criteria for a particular role in a movie that has a disparate impact on age if the part calls for someone of a particular age. In reaching its conclusion that the employer has the burden to prove the reasonable factors other than age defense the Supreme Court looked at another provision of the ADEA the bona fide occupational qualification defense. Twenty-eight of those 55 employees sued under the ADEA claiming Knolls illegally fired them because of their age. The Supreme Court then agreed to hear the case and eventually reversed the Second Circuit and reinstated the jurys finding that Knolls policy unlawfully discriminated because of age. At the trial a jury found Knolls had violated the ADEA because its layoff procedure had a disparate impact based on age. It then used those totals to decide who to lay off. In that case Meacham versus Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory the Supreme Court interpreted a provision of the ADEA that permits an employer to take an adverse employment action against an employee. The company had its supervisors rate their subordinates based on their performance flexibility and critical skills. Thirty of the 27 salaried employees the company laid off were at least 58 years old. Specifically the jury found that although the plaintiffs did not prove that Knolls intentionally discriminated against them they did prove that Knolls method of deciding who to lay off disproportionately harmed older workers. The BFOQ defense states that it is not unlawful for an employer to take adverse employment actions otherwise prohibited by the ADEA where age is a bona fide occupational qualification reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. The Supreme Court ruled that if an employer seeks to rely on that defense. A lawyer from Heemstede won from a attorney in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit initially affirmed the jurys findings but after the United States Supreme Court asked it to reconsider the Second Circuit reversed itself and ruled in favor of Knolls. In other words the ADEA permits employers to discriminate based on age considering age is legitimately necessary under the circumstances. As long as the adverse action is based on reasonable factors other than age. Even if the employment action is otherwise prohibited by the ADEA. The Supreme Court has previously recognized that the employer has the burden to establish the BFOQ affirmative defense.

1. Cut your trousers long, so when you first start wearing them you will have to roll them up a few times. Your inseam should be a few inches longer.

Don’t worry! It is authentic to roll them up.

“Why should I do this?” You might say.

Because they will shrink every time you wash and wear them!

2. All my pants are either jean cloth or cotton - I don’t have any wool because so many reenactments are hot! That is why I recommend you try to find a jean cloth. Jean cloth will be cooler.

3. Find a jean cloth that does not itch too badly. Or you can line your jean cloth pants if you have sensitive skin, but they will be so much cooler than wool pants.

Cotton pants are perfectly all right…they are documented in ECHOES OF GLORY: ARMS AND EQUIPMENT OF THE CONFEDERACY.

The military pattern was created from the civilian patterns of the day. Pick a style you like and get a pattern for it and follow the directions on the pattern

4. All stitching that shows on your trousers needs to be hand done as well as all the buttonholes.

I recommend using bone or metal buttons can be used. Some metal buttons can rust and stain your pants.

Brass would be a good metal to use if you are going for metal buttons, which are more durable.

You want strong buttons on your trousers because of all the wear and tear they will get. Stay away from shell or glass buttons because they will break.

5. Another suggestion is to put a back button on your trousers, so the material does not rip and to give this part of your pants as much strength as possible.

So, now your pants will last for many reenactments to come!

Expressing an Emotion - The Art of Writing Poetry

Writing poetry is an art, a way of expression, finding meaning in few words. A melody of passion flowing out onto the pages, words that flow into each other and yet express the inner most thoughts and feelings of those who read the words. Writing poetry is a gift, a wonderful gift, being able to illuminate words so that they form a picture, express a feeling and share a thought in so few words. Unlike telling a story or writing a novel that explains every intricate detail a poem leaves you to draw your own conclusion. Writing poetry can be a healing process, putting down on paper all the emotions locked up inside ones head, a way of remembering and a way of re-living. Poetry has many forms from free verse to sonnet but all poems tell a story, a story of words, words wrapped around each other in such away that they flow together, locked in meaning. The poem below is titled “Playing” and every time I read this poem I cannot help but smile, as too will any mother reading this poem. See if you smile.

Playing

Running gently
Screams of laughter
Looking back
I see you smile
Golden hair
Such bright blue eyes
Once a baby
In my arms

Laughing harder
Running around
Two years old
I feel so proud
Golden hair
And eyes so blue
You call “Mummy Mummy”
Come play too

Poetry can also portray emotions of hurt and betrayal, unrequited love, loss and great suffering. Just putting these feelings onto paper helps to unburden the mind and the heart. Off loading the grief, if only for a moment. The next two poems titled “Dreams” and “Suicide” display emotions of loss and sorrow. They are a complete contrast to the above poem “Playing” filled with laughter and happiness.

Images of place

Many of the worlds great poets wrote about loss and pain, Shakespeare’s Sonnets spoke of love “Shall I compare thee to a Summer’s Day” and Emily Dickinson’s poetry was about death “Because I could not stop for death, He kindly stopped for me”, all contained great emotions and sadness that could be felt by the reader. A Successful Failure

A successfully positioned business sometimes doesn’t win a new client. And that, my friend, is the point. Let me illustrate with an anecdote.

Recently I was making a new business pitch to a Charlotte area professional services firm. The second meeting took place after I had provided a detailed proposal to the company on how I work. From the two meetings and the proposal it was made abundantly clear that I take a comprehensive, strategic approach to communications.

One of the partners asked me if there was a “PR light” alternative. This meant that he wanted a tactical program that required very little involvement or input from him and the other partners. I assured him there was, but that was not my approach.

I guess I could have taken the company’s money every month just to perform a few tactical activities, but it would have been wrong for both of us. I wouldn’t feel right taking their money, nor would I be happy implementing a program that a PR intern could accomplish easily.

Needless to say, the firm selected another communications agency. To understand why this new business loss was a success, we need to look at a definition of positioning.

Positioning Defined

An organization’s brand identity must be a reflection of three things: market perceptions, the organization’s acumen, as well as its aspirations. Positioning is where these three elements overlap.

The point of positioning is to develop a platform from which all communications emanate. Positioning defines who we are, the kinds of customers we want, how we will compete, and how we are different.

So, before you can hone your brand identity, and before you develop and implement a communications plan, you must approve a positioning statement. From a communications standpoint, it is the heart of your brand.

Let’s look at the elements of positioning:

Market. The kinds of clients we want to do business with. Hoover ink’s market definition is: For organizations that are serious about their success and that understand the need for focused communications,

Competitive Offering. The products/services and/or type of service we will provide. Hoover ink’s competitive offering is: we are the PR and marketing firm that carefully defines its clients’ audiences and develops market-based positioning,

Differentiation. The benefit that makes us special. Hoover ink’s differentiation is: so that we can help our clients communicate to all of its constituencies clear, concise messages that have a bottom line impact.

When the prospect called to say they had selected another agency to handle its PR program, I was told that my approach was too strategic and comprehensive. I’ll take that as a compliment any day, and as an indicator that my positioning is on track.

Brand Your Name!

Have you ever thought about branding your name? Does the idea sound too egotistical for you or does it make good business sense? Let’s examine personal name branding and how it can help you achieve the recognition you need for your business and put you quickly on the path to success!

Promptly upon receiving my layoff notice from my position of nearly eleven years, I decided I needed to venture out on my own. I formed a limited liability company and named the concern after my name. Why? Because my name was more known than what I did. I possessed a lengthy work history as an accomplished technical writer but mostly everyone I dealt with in and out of my company knew me more by my name than by what I did for a living.

It also helped that I did a lot more than technical writing including public relations, creative writing, resume writing, etc. Usually when someone needed any type of writing project done, they contacted me first even if it was outside of my realm of responsibilities. Hence, for me, keeping my name “front and center” has been invaluable as I grow my business.

Think of some other names that transcends what these individuals do for a living. Martha Stewart is one of the most famous people — or infamous depending on how you define the category — that has used her name wisely over the years. KMart carries a line of her name branded products, a magazine is named for her, and popular books bear her name. Indeed, while Martha was in jail, her company’s stock tripled in value. Investors knew that the success or failure of her company depended chiefly on her direct involvement with the company. What a valuable name!

Tommy Hilfiger Corporation, through its subsidiaries, designs, sources and markets men’s and women’s sportswear, jeanswear and childrenswear under the Tommy Hilfiger trademarks. You may not know what Tommy looks like, but you know the name.

Donna Karan, a/k/a DKNY, is another pervasive name that has been popularly branded as has Louis Vitton [fashion handbags]; Michael Dell [computers]; Alexander Graham Bell [telephones]; Estee Lauder [cosmetics]; Dr. Atkins [diets]… the list goes on.

No one is saying that your name will become as well known as any one of these esteemed names. Few people reach the pinnacle of pervasive name recognition. However, in the overall scheme of things, your name may have more value in marketing your products than would an unknown generic name. Consider your options and weigh them intelligently!

Chapter One of Seven: The North

The area was known as Pigs Eye [St. Paul, Minnesota]; Northfield was a little more notorious since Jessie James robbed the 1st National Bank, in September of last year, and more to the West. But that was neither here nor there for Arizona-Blue. He didn’t like this part of the country for no other reason than it was cold, unpredictable weather, and he didn’t seem to offer enough freedom, it wasn’t bad thirty years ago, but it had become too tame, Even Mark Twain thought so. His conclusion of why he was here was: ‘Sometimes you just keep on riding and riding and end up where you don’t care to be.’

As his rode through the thick of the snow, he had come to a cabin, up in an area where the deer was running as wildto and froas the mavericks were down in Arizona, Texas and Wyoming. He smelt the smoke from a nearby chimney. He was a hundred and fifty plus miles North of St. Paul, but it seemed like he was in the Artic.

As Arizona came to a cabin, a man came out of the front door onto his porch. Two wolves stood by his side, a rifle in his hands. He noticed in the back of his house about thirty-more wolves tied to the fence; ‘…strange…’ thought Blue.

“Can I help yaw stranger?” asked the man on the porch.

Blue knew most everyone in this area did not know his name, and that was one unconscious reason he chose the Midwest I suppose, a time for a rest of wondering whom was going to shoot you in the back, or who you had to tangle with next. His reputation out West was preceding him wherever he’d go, but here, up here in the Midwest who could know his name? No one he speculated. Northfield was to hot for anyone like him, after the James Gang shoot out, and St. Paul looked like St. Louis, a conservative little city on the banks of the Mississippi, not enough get up and go for him, plus they sold little books on him: “The Fast Gun of the West: Arizona-Blue.” They did on all the gunfighters such as: Billy the Kid, Jessie James, Wild Bill, and so forth.

“I need a place to lodge for a day or two. I’m half frozen.”

The man laughed and motioned for Blue to tie his horse up out side and come in.

As Blue descended his horse, a young boy came out and took his horse saying,

“I’ll bed him down a spell, feed him for you sir.”

Blue heard the Midwest was quite hospital to strangers, they had to be, because sooner or later you ‘all ended-up needing the others help. ‘This kind of gives yaw a nice feeling,’ he told himself.

As Blue entered the house, he noticed a slim middle aged woman, boiling some stew (about thirty-six years old he’d guess).

“Some hot cider Mister?” she asked.

Blue was not sure what that was, but he knew it wasn’t whiskey.

“Sounds warming, I guess that’ll be just fine Miss…,” unsure how to address her.

She smiled, and commented:

“You’re not from around here I gather, you got a Southwestern accent?”

“I’m called Arizona; I guess because that is where I am from.”

“Arizona what? She asked.

“That’s it Miss, just Arizona, that’s what my pop called me, no more no less.”

She smiled again, the man came back in from the backdoor of the house, stomping the snow off his feet.

“Hi yaw, my names Harry,” he extended his hand to shake Arizona’s, “and this is my wife Feba, she’s Spanish, and a little cute wife at that.”

“Harry! stop making me blush.”

“Well,” said Arizona, “it looks like you got enough wolves around here.”

“I raise them. They can come in handy.” That was all that was said about the nest of wolves. Arizona got the drift of things, it was private, and he wasn’t about to step in on a man’s privacy.

“Mr. Arizona, please give your jacket to my boy, Tony.” He was standing in the back of Arizona. He hadn’t heard him come in. As Arizona took off his jacket, Harry, Tony and Feba noticed the guns. Arizona had one tight against his thigh, and one tucked into his belt.

“You won’t need them here sir,” said Harry with a little concern.

Arizona smiled. He was not a wanted man in Minnesota, or for that matter anyplace, just a notorious man, and seldom heard of way up in the North Country; and this was new country for him; if this was Wyoming, or Texas, or for that matter Tombstone, or Deadwood, the guns would stay. But he started to unbuckle them; then handed them to Harry to put away for safe keeping.

“How are the Indian problems up here?” Blue asked.

“Sometimes it ok, other times you just don’t know. We had several cabins up here a year ago, and the Chippewa’s burned three of them down. Rapped the women, after getting drunk, and took off. The Indians are all over the place. You just never know. I hunt bear and fox and sell the furs down at Fort Smelling. And yaw, some of the Wolves you see, end up being furs. Yaw got to eat. I hate killing them though.”

Harry noticed Arizona watch where he hung the guns up; right on the coat rack that lead to the front door.

“If you need them mister, they’re right there for the grabbing.”

“I got the picture, Harry.”

“Now for the dinner, it’s about 11-below zero out there, not too bad for the dead of winter. You’d think it was 10:00 PM, but it gets dark quick up here, its only 6:00 PM. Not much daylight in the heart of winter. Tonight it will get down to 20 + below. It’s like the cold knocks the sun out early I swear. It’s going to be a cold, cold winter, stranger, I mean Arizona.”

As they all four sat down to eat, Harry said grace, thanking God for his wife, son, and that the stranger did not get frozen like an ice cycle before he found his cabin.

“Let’s eat,” says Harry, and plunged into the hot stew.

The stew was great, though Arizona, as he took his third helping.

“My name is Alex, Mr. Arizona. Are you a gunfighter? You know, like Jessie James, and Billy the Kid?”

“Hush,” said Feba, “Mr. Arizona is a gentleman, not a killer.”

Said Harry, a bit uncomfortable with the guns hanging where the coats and hats hung:

“Mater-of-fact, if you don’t mind, what is your line of work?”

“Well, that’s a good question. I’ve been a soldier, fought at the Battle of Chickamauga, and I was sheriff for a while, and a deputy. And I guess you could say a cowboy of sorts. Not sure what a gunslinger is, but maybe that to.”

“Jack of many trades I see,” commented Harry.

Feba looked at Blues eyes; she was almost frozen by them. But her husband was the jealous type, and said nothing, just smiled and continued to eat her stew.
