The History Of Texas Holdem Poker

May 16th, 2008

Texas Holdem is a variety of Poker, a card game which originated
in the 19th century. The origins of Poker are still disputed to
this day, with a number of conflicting accounts about where it
came from, and who first played it; similar games exist back to
the Renaissance period. The word ‘Poker’ actually comes from the
German word ‘pochen’, which means “to knock”.

However, most accounts generally agree that it was French
settlers who first played Poker in New Orleans around 1830. It
may have been introduced to them by Persian traders, as it bears
strong similarities with the 16th century Persian card game As
Nas. The popularity of Poker meant that it quickly spread
throughout the USA, along the transport routes of rivers and
railroads. It became especially popular when played amongst
cowboys in the Old West.

Texas Holdem, or Hold’em as it is also known, is today one of
the most popular versions of Poker in the world. Although nobody
is really sure where this version was first played, it seems
clear that Texas was the state of origin! Some reports say that
the first ever game was played in Robstown in the 1900s and it
spread to Dallas in 1925. Texas Holdem has enjoyed widespread
recognition ever since.

The popularity of Texas Holdem was widely increased in 1970. In
this year, the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino was opened in Las
Vegas by Benny Binion. Binion decided to take over a small
invitational Poker tournament from Riverside Casino’s Tom
Morehead. What as the name of the tournament? The World Series
of Poker and the game of choice was Texas Holdem.

Binion focused on the gambling element of the game by devising
the idea of rapidly increasing antes and blinds, so that a
winner could be produced within a relatively short space of
time. In 1972, 8 players took part in the World Series of Poker
tournament; thirty years later, the 8 had increased to 800! This
annual tournament is now recognised as the most important in the
world. In the last five years, the increasing popularity of
televised tournaments means that Texas Holdem has become a part
of mainstream television.

Additionally, through modern innovations in technology, Texas
Holdem Poker has branched off in new directions. Games can now
be played directly through the internet, or even on a cell
phone! The game’s simplicity and huge entertainment value have
contributed to its popularity, which shows no sign of decrease.
Texas Holdem is clearly the most famous Poker game in the world.

Why Showmanship Is Essential to Success

May 1st, 2008

Being successful as a magician relies just as much on your stage
persona and your ability to be engaging as it does on the tricks
you choose to perform or the technical skills you possess.

The reason for this is because tricks in and of themselves can
fall flat if not presented in the right way. A sleight of hand
that dazzles when performed by an engaging magician can leave an
audience yawning when in the less capable hands of an
under-whelming performer.

So if you want your tricks to go over well, you’ve got to learn
how to sell them to your audience.

That means you’ve got to work on your showmanship just as much
as you have to work on the tricks themselves. Learn how to get
the audience eating out of the palm of your hand!

If you are not sure how to do this, don’t worry. Showmanship is
something you can easily learn and improve upon with practice.
It’s not necessary an inborn trait that you either have or don’t
have-it’s a learned skill that even the best magicians are
constantly honing and perfecting.

Here’s how to make good showmanship part of your magic routine:

Build a Bridge to the Audience

Whether you are onstage in front of ten people or ten thousand,
your success is directly related to how much your audience feels
inclined to trust you and suspend their disbelief for you.

To win them over, talk directly to them. Make eye contact. Make
use of volunteers. Don’t confine your show to the stage. Invite
audience members up, or go down to mingle with them.

Don’t Wait to Warm Up-Be “On” Right from the Start!

Don’t wait to “warm up”-you’ve got to be “on” right from the
start! Most magic shows last only about an hour or less, so make
it a point to create your relationship with the audience quickly.

Cultivate a Stage Persona

Ideally, magic tricks should bring about a sense of wonder and
excitement, not a sense of being tricked or fooled. And you as a
magician should therefore aim to be mystical and wise, not
hokey.

Of course, there are many ways to be entertaining. Some of the
most successful magicians in the biz are very serious in terms
of their demeanor. Others, however, are jocular and love to
crack jokes during their shows.

Your “stage persona” is really up to you. If you’re naturally
inclined toward being chatty and making jokes, go for it on
stage.

If you’re naturally more reserved and quiet, you can think about
adopting a more “David Blaine-like” character when you’re
performing.

The trick (pun intended!) is just to make sure you approach it
as a role or a performance. Give the audience the dazzling
entertainment they want and you will always be a hit.

Just Believe

Believe in what you are doing and suspend your disbelief as much
as you can. The illusions work best when you truly trust in your
abilities and honestly belief that you are creating miracles! In
reality you know that they are tricks, but if you act like
they’re just fakes or frauds then you’ll never win over your
viewers. Put it this way: if you don’t believe in yourself, why
on earth should your audience?

I’ll choose rap over hip hop any day: Rap lyrics keep it rea

April 18th, 2008

If you listen to rap music on a regular basic you will notice the stark differences between rap lyrics and hip hop lyrics. It is widely known that rap came up from the streets where the artists would use their rhyming skills to tell the world about their sense of isolation and not being part of the American mainstream.

Hip hop lyrics from the same place, but this time it was middle class children who did not like how they were treated as their families moved into the suburbs and edge cities.

So what happened?

Along the way, hip hop went mainstream as it was cleaner and dance friendly. Hip hop lyrics made their way from the streets, to the clubs, to MTV and finally to the top of the music charts. Rap lyrics remained where they began, as the music of the down trodden and this gives emerging artists the freedom to experiment without worrying about their best camera angle.

You can still get a good rap album onto the charts with very little time on MTV.

How do rap artists maintain such complete control over their music:

1. Rap lyrics are seen as more raw so the artists can get away with more explicit and sensitive subjects. Whether it’s gangs, drugs, homophobia, or domestic violence, rappers have total creative freedom to address taboo subjects with out turning off their fans.

2. Rap lyrics are mostly created by individual artist and not song writing committees. An artist could free style in person or on paper. It doesn’t matter because you don’t get the huge song writing teams that dominate pop, country and even hip hop music.

3. Rap lyrics are not music reliant. They actually sound better without huge overpowering beats behind them. Most professional rappers do their best work when they have mike without any musical accompaniment

4. Rap lyrics are not easily recycled since they are based on personal rather than universal experiences. The original lyrics can touch the audience but it is not easily transferred from one artist to another. Rappers can inject pieces of their personality, family history, educational background and more into their songs.

Of course, you can put samples into hip hop or pop songs, but it is very different for a middle class thirteen year old to remake your song and not sound like an idiot.

In the end, I still listen to all types of music. It’s just that when it comes to originality and raw musical styles, I’ll take rap lyrics over hip hop.

Planning a Baby Shower

April 6th, 2008

This article has information for the novice as well as the more experienced. Information is provided pertaining to when to plan the shower, who should give the shower and how to go about planning a baby shower. Also included is some historical background of baby showers for you entertainment.

Baby Showers have been a tradition around the world for many years. It is a cheerful celebration for the mom-to-be and the baby shower guests alike. Just like everything around us, even baby showers have changed with the passage of time. Earlier baby showers were more traditional. Present day celebrations include almost anything and everything to suit the baby shower hostess and the guests.

In the present time baby showers can take any shape, type or baby shower theme. Baby showers vary from the strictly traditional baby shower, to simply wild and cool baby showers. Gone are the days when baby showers were boring and dry. Now you can celebrate the occasion any way you wish. The main thing is that it entertains everyone included in the baby shower party.

A couple of things about baby showers is how to go about planning the shower, and who should throw the baby shower for the mom-to-be.
There are hundreds of ways to celebrate the baby shower. As for who can give the baby shower, anyone except the expectant couple.

Remember, the baby shower is given to celebrate the expected arrival of the newborn child. So, it is proper for anyone to take the initiative. A relative, close friend, or even a close co-worker should feel perfectly okay about giving a baby shower for the parents-to-be.

Also, the shower doesn’t neccessarily have to be planned and given by only one person. After all, a baby shower can be a huge undertaking, and having several people participate will help divide up all the work involved. A group of friends or relatives could get together and plan the event. This would be a wonderful display of showing your happiness for the new arrival for the parents-to-be.

However, traditional baby shower ethics were somewhat stricter than today. That only non-relatives are to host a baby showerfriends, co-workers, church groups, and even neighbors etc. But times have changed, and it has become more common and acceptable for relatives to host baby showers too. And why not? Everyone has a right to celebrate the occasion. When it comes to close relatives they are supposed to support the couple.

Not only this, but a baby shower is also an opportunity to pamper the guest of honor. Once the new baby joins the family, it may take the new parents a considerable amount of time, money and effort to indulge in greeting and partying with the baby shower guests. So, instead of burdening them further with more responsibilities. Why not treat them to something special?

Black and White Photo Conversion

March 24th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Peter Horner

Most images were produced in black and white for nearly a
hundred years after the invention of photography, but now colour
images have become commonplace. Creating strong three
dimensional images on a piece of paper is one of the best
attributes of black and white photography, as the effect can be
more striking than with a colour photograph. Without the colour
to distract us we become more aware of the subtle tones which
can be found within a black and white image. In this article I
will share the technique I use that will help you create
beautiful, striking and moody black and white images from your
colour photographs.

Digital cameras have a black and white mode but more information
and detail will be recorded in colour, which will also create a
higher quality printed image. This is why I always shoot in
colour then convert images later. There are several ways of
converting an image to black and white using Photoshop and many
other image editing programs. You could simply desaturate the
colours, but creating a black and white image with real tone and
definition goes beyond this. Levels, curves and the Unsharp Mask
can be used creatively with black and white conversion to
provide further control over tones and contrast to create a
stunning image.

Channel Mixer - I have found that using the Photoshop Channel
Mixer is the easiest way to convert an image to black and white
and produces the best results. The Channel Mixer allows you to
control how much red, green and blue contribute to the final
monochrome image.

The Channel Mixer can be selected from the adjustment layer
popup menu in the layers palette or you can also access it from
under the image menu.

Clicking on the left tick box entitled Monochrome will convert
your photograph into a greyscale image, and gives you the
ability to blend the red, green and blue channels. Adjust each
of the sliders to produce an image to your liking. As a rule
make sure that the total values for each channel adds up to
100%. This creates monochrome images that are the equivalent of
ones shot on black and white film through red, green or blue
filters. For example if you wanted to maximize cloud contrast in
a blue sky, then a red filter would achieve this. I usually set
the red channel to 0 and the green channel to 100 to cut down on
the amount of noise, or sometimes a combination of red and green
depending on the image.

Curves and Levels - Brightness and contrast can be adjusted in
Photoshop by using the curves and levels tools, which can be
found under Image > Adjustments Curves/Levels. Both curves and
levels allow you to adjust the tonal range of an image. When
using the levels command you can make adjustments to just three
variables, highlights, shadows and midtones. I prefer to use
curves as it gives you more precision. With curves you can
adjust any point along a scale while keeping up to 15 other
values constant. By adjusting the black point and white point in
curves you can give your image more contrast. At opposite ends
of the diagonal line you will find a small dot. When you grab
hold one of the dots with your mouse and drag it around you will
see the image change. To create more contrast drag the black
point lower and the white point higher, so that either end of
the diagonal line is curved. Practice using curves and levels
and explore the different effects you can achieve with your
images.

Unsharp Mask - The Unsharp Mask is my preferred tool for
sharpening images, which can be found under Filter > Sharpen >
Unsharp Mask. It is a traditional film compositing technique
used to sharpen edges in an image and corrects blurring. The
Unsharp Mask locates pixels that differ from surrounding pixels
by the threshold you specify and increases the pixels’ contrast
by the amount you specify. In order to get the look which I
desire in my images I use the Unsharp Mask twice. I begin by
using a high radius and lower amount, such as a radius of 50
pixels and an amount of 30%. This gives the image a much more
intense look and details will stand out. The second time I use a
lower radius of 1 pixel with a higher amount of 30%, which will
correct any blurring and sharpen the image.

Visit this page to view examples of images created using a
combination of these techniques -
